(Motorsports news) The Australian had originally signed a contract with McLaren until the end of 2024, after being enticed away from an Alpine reserve role last year with the promise of a race seat. However, following a solid debut season as Lando Norris’ teammate, McLaren announced on Wednesday that the Australian would be retained for at least another two years.
“I am thrilled to be extending my partnership with McLaren for many years,” Piastri stated of his new contract. I want to be fighting at the front of the grid with this team, and the ambition and foundations that are already in place to get us there excite me. “The welcome I’ve received and the relationships I’ve formed have already made this feel like home.”
“The team’s consistent belief in me has made me feel extremely valued, and the team’s desire for me to be a part of its long-term future made this an easy decision.” It means a lot to be wanted like that, and for the squad to believe in me after only half a season. It’s fantastic to confirm that Piastri has signed a multi-year extension with the team,” team principal Andrea Stella added.
“Piastri is an asset to McLaren and consistently impresses with his performance, work ethic, and attitude, so the decision was simple for the team.” He has already proven crucial to the squad, so having his vote of confidence is fantastic as we strive to win titles again in the future. I’m excited to see how he grows with us as we continue on this journey together.”
Piastri has yet to finish on the podium in a grand prix, but he did finish second in a sprint race in Belgium this year. Because to Piastri’s contract renewal, McLaren’s current drivers are now guaranteed for the foreseeable future.
Lando Norris has a contract with McLaren until the end of 2025, but the team will certainly face competition for his services beyond that, with Ferrari, Red Bull, and Aston Martin all being connected with the Briton.
