The Premier League winners announced on Thursday that Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has agreed to a two-year contract extension that would keep him with the team until 2027.
With this decision, Guardiola will stay at the team he joined in 2016 for almost ten years, which has produced a stunning collection of awards, including six Premier League crowns and one Champions League title.
City supporters, who may have worried that Guardiola’s tenure was coming to an end because his current contract expires at the end of this season, will be happy to hear the news.
The 53-year-old, who previously enjoyed successful stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, said in a statement, “Manchester City means so much to me.”
“I’m in my tenth season here, and we’ve had so many incredible moments together. I feel a really unique connection to this football team. I am thrilled to be staying for two more seasons because of this.”
Since joining City, which is controlled by Abu Dhabi, in 2016, Guardiola has transformed the team into a trophy-winning machine.
He has led City to eighteen major championships and created a football brand that is revered all over the world. They have lost four straight games, the most since Guardiola took over, and their form has somewhat decreased this season.
The manager went on, “I felt I couldn’t leave now, simple as that.” After four straight losses, I believe we should be given an opportunity to recover and try to turn things around.
We deserve to be here, in my opinion. I’m not boasting when I say this, but it’s the reality.
“I like being here. I enjoy running this club as manager. He continued, “As soon as I lose that feeling, even if I’m still under contract, I’ll call my chairman and CEO and tell them that it’s best for the club right now for me to leave.”
“I extended a little bit longer because I don’t feel that way right now.”
“Like every City supporter, I am thrilled that Pep’s journey with Manchester City will continue; allowing his dedication, passion, and innovative thinking to continue shaping the landscape of the game,” said City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak in a statement.
“Our players and coaching staff, the culture of our Club, and the English game at large will continue to be the direct beneficiaries of his unquenchable desire for success and improvement.”
Guardiola agreed to a one-year extension, according to British media on Wednesday. However, his term will now exceed ten years, which is a huge boost for the team, which is being investigated for more than 100 alleged violations of the Premier League’s financial regulations over a nine-year period.
The city disputes every accusation made against them.
Although they trail Premier League leaders Liverpool by five points, Guardiola made a positive statement.
