Pedro González, also known as “Pedri,” is a midfielder for Barcelona. He has formally signed a contract extension with the team, securing his future with the Catalan powerhouses through June 30, 2030. The club’s management made the announcement on Thursday.
At the signing ceremony, which took place at Spotify Camp Nou and was attended by important people like FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta, vice president of sports Rafa Yuste, and director of football Anderson Luis de Souza, also known as Deco, the Spanish international was accompanied by his parents and brother.
Given that Pedri will turn 23 in November, this new contract guarantees the continuation of one of the most important members of the current team and a pivotal role for the team’s future.
Along with a UEFA European Championship and an Olympic silver medal with the Spanish national team, Pedri’s achievements with Barcelona include one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey, and two Supercopa de España medals.
In the summer of 2020, the 17-year-old Tegueste, Santa Cruz de Tenerife native joined Barcelona from UD Las Palmas. Despite his youth, he made a name for himself as a consistent starter under Ronald Koeman’s tutelage.
Pedri played in 52 games during his first season with Barcelona. He also played a crucial part in the Olympic Games and Euro 2020 that summer, playing in 12 games in both competitions and accruing almost all of the available minutes.
He experienced eight physical problems over the next three seasons, though, which hindered his improvement. Due to this, he only played in 22 games for Barcelona in the 2021–2022 season, 35 in the 2022–2023 season, and 34 in the current 2023–2024 campaign.
Coach Hansi Flick’s arrival has allowed Pedri to return to the starting lineup after he recovered from a grade 2 internal lateral ligament sprain in his left knee that he suffered while playing for his country this summer.
He has already participated in 32 games this season, 30 of which he has started. As a vital metronome in the middle of midfield, his physical toughness has been matched with an increased level of maturity in his game-reading skills.
With 175 appearances, Pedri is notably the third player in Barcelona history to play in as many games before turning 23. He is only surpassed by Leo Messi (214), and Xavi Hernández (179). To possibly break this record, he has till November 25.
