(Tennis news) In men’s singles, Cameron Norrie won his first Masters 1000 title as he beat Nikoloz Basilashvili in a three set final at Indian Wells. Norrie was not only able to return the high speed strokes but was quick enough to get to the ball and hit winners from difficult angles. Norrie was particularly aggressive as he did not lose his balance in the biggest match of his career. Norrie defeated Basilashvili 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
In the women’s singles, Paula Badosa took the title as Victoria Azarenka lost in a heartbreaking final which lasted for three hours. The first set alone lasted for an hour and 19 minutes, the second set saw Azarenka coming back in form to take the match to the decider. In the final set, Azarenka had a chance to serve out the match at 5-4 but the Spaniard came back to the game and then forced a tie breaker. As the match came to an end, Paul dropped for the second time in the event. Paul defeated Azarenka 7-6(7-5), 2-6, 7-6(7-2).
In men’s doubles, the Russian pair of Andrey Rublev and Aslan Karatsev fell in the final hurdle as they lost to John Peers and Filip Polášek in the final. Peers and Filip took the first set without much roadblocks as they took it under half an hour but in the second set there was a tremendous comeback by the Russians. They were down 3-5 and saved a couple of match points to level the scores and finally made it 6 all, in the tiebreak a few errors cost them the set as they finished runners up. John and Peers defeated Rublev and Karatsev 6-3, 7-6(7-5).
In women’s doubles, Elise Mertens and Hsieh Su-wei took the trophy as they defeated Veronika Kudermetova and Elena Rybakina in the only straight set win final as both the singles and men’s doubles went till the final set. The second seeds only dropped a single set in the tournament and the final also had a similar script in mind. The first set saw both the teams defend their serves as the tiebreak saw Veronika and Elena giving into pressure. The second set took only half an hour as compared to the first one which took 56 minutes. Elise and Hsieh defeated Veronika and Elena 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.
