Mesut Ozil announces retirement from professional football at the age of 34

(Football news) Mesut Ozil has announced his retirement from professional football. His last game was on 2nd February for Istanbul Basaksehir against Kayserispor. Ozil had a 17 year long career where he played for Schalke 04, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Fenerbahce and Istanbul Basaksehir. In his illustrious career he won DFB Pokal Cup, La Liga, Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, 4 FA Cups and a Community Shield. He played 92 games for Germany and was an important part of the World Cup win in 2014 and the 3rd place finish in 2010.

Mesut Ozil was a pure number 10 who was a striker’s dream. In his career he was season’s top assist provider in the Bundesliga, La Liga and the Premier League. There are very few players in the history of football who can match Mesut Ozil’s vision. He won the German player of the year award 5 times and has been a part of the UEFA team of the year twice. He is one of the few great players who never managed to win the UEFA Champions League trophy. Ozil will go down in history as one of the greatest playmakers of all time. 

The end of Mesut Ozil’s international and club career is very sad. He was always someone who didn’t have a high workrate and hence was considered a luxury player. As the game progressed he became more of a liability. However in his prime he was unstoppable for any team in the world. In 3 seasons with Real Madrid he finished with 81 assists which is just incredible. Nowadays 34 is way too early to retire but injuries seen to have caught up with him. It will be interesting to see if Mesut Ozil goes into coaching at all in the future.
