For the Big Bash League season 2024-25, the Adelaide Strikers have signed Ollie Pope as a pre-draft overseas player. Pope will miss the Strikers’ inaugural game on December 17 against Sydney Thunder, though, as the England Test team wraps up their tour of New Zealand on December 18.
Pope, is currently serving as England’s temporary captain in the current series against Sri Lanka, in the absence of Ben Stokes who was injured while playing in The Hundred. Pope will team up with the Strikers with players like D’Arcy Short, Matthew Short, Chris Lynn, and Alex Carey.
With an average of 33.25 across 50 matches, the English vice-captain has a strong T20 record for Surrey. However, he struggled in The Hundred, scoring just 35 runs in five matches for the London Spirit, as their team came last in the men’s competition.
“Signing with the Adelaide Strikers is an incredible opportunity for me. Adelaide is such a fantastic city with a vibrant cricket culture, and the Adelaide Oval is one of the most iconic grounds in the world,” said Pope. “I’m really looking forward to playing in front of the passionate Strikers fans and being part of a team with such a strong reputation,” he continued.
Tim Paine, the new head coach of the Strikers, is excited about working with the English right-hand batter Pope.
“Ollie Pope is an exceptional talent with a proven track record at the highest level. His dynamic batting style and wicket-keeping abilities are a fantastic addition to our squad. We’re thrilled to have him on board and believe he will be a key player for us this season. His experience and leadership will undoubtedly elevate our team,” said Paine.
