(Football news) Premature talks have taken place between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nuno Espirito Santo over a shock return to the Molineux. Nuno left Wolves 17 months ago but now the club are seriously exploring the possibility of bringing him back and have opened discussions with his agent and representatives. It’s believed the former Wolves boss is interested in a return and has his heart set on an emotional reunion with the club where he enjoyed so much success over the years, guiding them from the Championship to successive seventh-placed Premier League finishes and also took them to the Europa League quarter-final.
Nuno left Wolves job after the team finished 13th in 2020-21 Premier League season but relations between him and chairman Jeff Shi deteriorated The 48-year-old is currently in Saudi Arabia managing Al-Ittihad as he joined the club in the summer following a hiatus after his short-lived stint at Tottenham Hotspur. He signed a two-year contract with Al-Ittihad, where he has three of his former Wolves staff members; first-team coach Ian Cathro, fitness specialist Antonio Dias and goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa working in Saudi Arabia.
The only obstacle is the sticking point of getting him out of his Al-Ittihad contract but there is a willingness on both sides to explore a resolution after initial talks took place between the two parties last night. According to rumours, Wolves director Fosun and Wolves chairman Jeff Shi are contemplating on rehiring their former head coach or look elsewhere. Shi is currently interviewing available candidates as he interviewed ex-Wolves coach Rob Edwards this week, after Julen Lopetegui turned the job down for family reasons.
Nuno has the highest win percentage of any manager in Wolves’ history but there is a mixed among the fanbase as to whether his potential return is the best move. However, with Wolves in the relegation zone and an apparent lack of obvious candidates after Lopetegui rejected them, a surprise reunion may be the only option on the cards. Nuno is a regular watcher of Wolves games and is still in contact with people from the club and the city. A large number of his former players are still in touch with the likes of captain Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez
