(Tennis news) Nick Kyrgios, who finished second at Wimbledon the previous year, withdrew from the Halle Open as his latest setback in his effort to recover from a chronic knee injury.

“I tried everything here in Halle the last couple of days, but then I had to make the decision to pull out”, Nick said in a statement on the tournament website. “I want, when I play, to deliver a performance like last year when I was in the semifinals. But that will really not be possible.”

Tournament organisers said Kyrgios was “still suffering from the aftereffects of a complicated knee injury which had put him out of action for around seven months,” adding that he felt a recurrence of the knee issue while training in Halle.

Nick Kyrgios, who underwent knee surgery in January, competed last week at the Stuttgart Open on grass for the first time since losing to Wu Yibing in straight sets. After losing to Wu Yibing in Stuttgart’s opening round earlier this month, Nick complained of having limited movement.

“I feel my knee every point. I can’t walk without pain,” Kyrgios said during the match against Wu Yibing.

With a 37-10 record and a tour-leading 12 victories on grass, Nick Kyrgios had the finest season of his career in 2022. Aslan Karatsev, a Russian who is rated 45th overall, will take Nick’s spot in Halle Open.

Both for the sheer talent he brings to the tennis court and the sideshow of his explosive personality, which is frequently fascinating in and of itself, Nick Kyrgios is consistently one of the tournament’s greatest draws.

For those reasons, tennis fans will be eager to see Kyrgios ready in time for Wimbledon. A fit Nick Kyrgios is capable of defeating anyone on the circuit with his massive serve and a game designed for a grass court. This year, Novak Djokovic will try to win his fifth straight Wimbledon, and players like Carlos Alcaraz think the Australian is his biggest threat. In order for Kyrgios to be healthy for Wimbledon, which starts on July 3, he still has two weeks.
