Newcastle thrash Manchester United 3-0

Newcastle

(Football news) The visitors proved too strong for a very poor Man United, who were unable to recover from their three-goal defeat in the Manchester derby, in a rematch of last year’s championship game.

The visitors’ goals came from Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall in the first half and Joe Willock in the second. Eddie Howe’s team was well-deserving of their spot in the final eight.

Both managers made significant adjustments from their Premier League weekend matches. Man United’s squad made seven changes from the Manchester derby, while Newcastle’s starting lineup made eight changes from the beginning of their 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In the early going, Man United appeared to have the better start as the Red Devils moved the ball with purpose and pace, while the visitors lost Matt Targett to what appeared to be a significant hamstring injury.

In the thirteenth minute, Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka—who spent the first part of the previous season on loan at Manchester United—had to make a deft save to stop a low drive from Casemiro.

After receiving an early booking, Hannibal Mejbri was lucky to avoid receiving another one soon after, as the midfield player launched himself into another challenge.

In the 22nd minute, with Newcastle just beginning to break through the Man United midfield, Matt Ritchie, starting for the first time since January, powerfully attempted to put the ball wide of Andre Onana’s goal.

The game’s breakthrough came for the Magpies in the 28th minute, thanks to some superb work from Tino Livramento. After taking Alejandro Garnacho’s ball down the left, the forward drove forward and released Almiron, who touched the ball and found the far corner of the net.

As Man United attempted to respond quickly, Mount deflected a low cross from Garnacho beyond the post and then Martial almost avoided a cross from Diogo Dalot.

In the 35th minute, Sergio Reguilon then struck the crossbar with a shot, but in less than a minute, Newcastle doubled their lead when Hall curled a superb volley into the bottom corner.

Once more, the Magpies penetrated down their left, and it ultimately broke for Hall just inside the penalty area. The young player skillfully sent the ball past Onana, who was diving. In the 41st minute, Willock fired at Onana’s body. Dalot then attempted a shot from the opposite end that flew past Dubravka’s goal.

After that, Mount tried a strong shot on goal, but Dubravka had to fly across his goal to retain Newcastle’s two-goal lead at the half. Newcastle was under some pressure.

Dalot and Casemiro were replaced on the field by Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Sofyan Amrabat. The hosts had an early opportunity in the second half when Martial turned a low cross wide of the near post.

Man United appeared more determined after the interval as Amrabat fired one over the crossbar in the 54th minute and Antony slammed one over two minutes later.

On the hour, though, Willock drove towards the Man United penalty area and smashed the ball into the bottom corner to give Newcastle the advantage.

After coming in with Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund, Fernandes missed the goal in the 74th minute from a tight angle. In the 76th minute, Longstaff almost scored with a spectacular strike.

The home supporters, who stuck around until the very end, had little to rejoice about as Newcastle easily advanced to the final eight of the competition Ten Hag had won the year before.

In Saturday’s Premier League early kickoff, Man United will be looking to rebound against Fulham, while Newcastle will play Arsenal later in the afternoon.
