(Cricket News) The Guardian has reported that the 2024 T20 World Cup’s marquee match between India and Pakistan will take place in New York. The USA and the West Indies are co-hosting the tournament, which is set to take place in June.
According to the reports, the match will take place in a pop-up stadium on the outskirts of New York, with a temporary stadium that can hold 34,000 spectators being built for the event. The reason the match is taking place in New York is that, according to the most recent census data, there are approximately 7,11,000 Indians and 1,00,000 people of Pakistani descent living in the city.
The only three venues in the US will be central Broward Park in Florida, Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas, and Eisenhower Park on Long Island, which is about 25 miles from downtown Manhattan. Cricket is also making its way back into the Olympic fold after more than 120 years, as it has been included in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The time difference between Delhi and New York is 10 and a half hours, but some of the India matches will be scheduled to serve the Indian television audiences.
Cricket’s journey back to the Olympics after a protracted ban is inextricably linked to the Indian Premier League. The league’s contribution to the growth of the Twenty20 format, which was subsequently adopted by nations worldwide, is credited with helping the sport be considered for inclusion in the Olympics, which had previously been unable to include the 50-over format.
In 2017, following Los Angeles’s awarding of the Games, cricket was included in the first shortlist of 14 sports that could be added to the schedule at their recommendation.
