(Football news) Napoli are one step away from winning the Scudetto this season as a stoppage-time goal by Giacomo Raspadori earned them a narrow 1-0 victory over Juventus on Sunday after Juve were left disappointed after their two goals were ruled out by VAR reviews. Raspadori had to come off the bench to fire Napoli 17 points clear at the top of the table as they are on 78 points and could claim the title next weekend if they beat Salernitana and Lazio fail to win against Inter.
Juventus, who subsequently returned to the top four after their 15-point deduction was revoked on Thursday after a new court hearing as they still remained third on 59 points, two behind second-placed Lazio who continued their poor form after they lost against Torino on Saturday. The first half saw Juventus allow Napoli with the lion’s share of possession as they created chances of counter-attacks. The approach did not result in many chances, Juve just managed only three shots on target.
Napoli’s first proper chance came five minutes into the second half from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but Szczesny did really well to keep his low strike out. The game finally sprung to life in the 70th minute when Napoli again came close to taking the lead this time through their top scorer Victor Osimhen who fired wide of the post. Osimhen again got a golden chance from a corner but header was straight into the arms of Szczesny. Juve thought they had taken the lead with a solo effort by Angel Di Maria in the 82nd minute only to see it cancelled by VAR check as Arkadiusz Milik’s tackle on Stanislav Lobotka in the build up was deemed unfair.
Dusan Vlahovic found the net for Juve in added time but his effort was ruled out because the ball left the pitch before Federico Chiesa’s cross. Napoli had the final laugh when they sealed their eighth away league win in a row through Raspadori, after the Italian striker finished a beautiful lofted cross by midfielder Eljif Elmas. Juventus on the other hand have suffered their first third straight defeat as they are winless in five of their last six games in all competitions.
