(Motorsport) The Mexico Grand Prix has secured a contract extension that will see it remain a venue in the Formula 1 calendar until 2025. The race has become one of the most popular amongst F1 enthusiasts, especially with Red Bull’s Sergio Perez generating interest with the local population. The deal will start next year as part of Formula 1’s 24 race calendar and will be the second race of a triple header, taking place between the United States Grand Prix and the Brazilian Grand Prix.

This year’s Mexican GP is set to take place this weekend at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez for the seventh time since the race was introduced in 2015. Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali said “I am very pleased to announce that Formula 1 will continue to race in Mexico City for another three years under this new agreement," he said. "Every year the race attracts a large number of passionate fans, and the atmosphere is incredible, and I know everyone will be excited by this news." 

In other news, Alpine’s Fernando Alonso has been reinstated of his seventh place after a successful appeal. The Spaniard was given a 30 second penalty which resulted in him being dropped from 7th to 15th and the original appeal was ruled inadmissible. However, Alpine’s right to review was accepted, resulting in Alonso retaining his seventh place. A statement released by Alpine read “BWT Alpine F1 Team thanks the FIA stewards for convening and reaching a positive conclusion on the matter involving Car #14 from last weekend's United States Grand Prix. 

“The team welcomes the decision made by the aforementioned stewards, whereby Car #14 reinstates its seventh place finish and six points from the race. We look forward to continuing our collaborative work alongside the FIA to ensure the racing spectacle is maintained to the highest quality. The team now looks forward to competing this weekend at the Mexico City Grand Prix." The punishment was originally given when Haas complained that Alonso and Sergio Perez were allowed to continue racing after damage from collisions. Stewards rejected the complaint against Red Bull but gave Alonso a 30 second penalty. The point of contention was that Haas lodged their complaint 24 minutes after the specified deadline, a fact that the FIA admitted should not have been accepted.
