(Sports News) Mivaan Singh, a 22-year-old golfer from Chandigarh, secured victory in the esteemed Chief Commissioner Cup 2023 at Chandigarh Golf Club, enhancing the city’s golfing legacy. The month-long competition concluded with a ceremony at Chandigarh Golf Club on Sunday, where trophies and medals were awarded to the winners and runners-up, along with other participants. The tournament, inaugurated in 1983, featured over 35 golfers and utilized a match-play format.
Hailing from a family with a strong sports background, with his father Hari Singh being a five-time national rally champion and Asia Zone champion, Mivaan began playing golf at the age of six. As the captain of the Punjab Aces in the Chandigarh Golf League, he led the team to the runners-up position in 2022 and the quarter-finals in the previous year.
Expressing his joy, Singh stated, “It feels special to win the Chief Commissioner Cup. I was introduced to golf at the age of six and have seen many editions of the tournament being played at the club. I was competing in the tournament for the first time, and to join the list of past winners like Jeev Milkha Singh is a moment to cherish.”
Throughout the tournament, played from November to January, Singh showcased his skills by securing victories in successive rounds. Notably, he emerged triumphant in the final against Siddhant Jain with a 5 and 4 win. Reflecting on the challenges faced, Singh mentioned, “Playing the golf course here is always a challenge, even if it’s my home course. Playing in different conditions over the last two months was the main challenge this time. Winning the semi-final with three holes still left gave me a lot of confidence for the final.”
The Chief Commissioner Cup has seen renowned golfers like Jeev Milkha Singh, IPS Mann, Harmeet Kahlon, Sandeep Sandhu, Gurbaaz Mann, and K Raghav Bhandari claim victory in the past. Jeev Milkha Singh commended Mivaan’s achievement, noting, “Mivaan is a talented player and plays with the conduct of a gentleman golfer. The Chief Commissioner Cup is one of the prestigious tournaments for club members, and Mivaan’s feat is a joy for all the members.”
