Mirwais Ashraf, the head of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, has been given three more years to lead the organization. On Friday, a senior ACB official affirmed the development. It was anticipated that Ashraf, who was named chairman of the ACB in 2021, would step down in August 2023.
“Due to his performance for the last three years, the Taliban government extended Mirwais Ashraf’s new term as the chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board for three more years,” said the ACB official. “Look stability is key to our success and we try to value it,” he said.
“During the last three years we had one chairman, one CEO, and one coach and we changed our captain only once as we feel that if we want to develop as a cricketing nation we need to put major focus on stability and don’t try to go for chopping and changing,” he said.
It has been learned that Ashraf’s three-year term as chairman has been extended by Afghanistan’s Prime Minister, Mullah Muhammad Hassan, who is also the country’s patron-in-chief.
Ashraf, who was first nominated to lead the board and then elected to carry on with his duties, will lead the board until December when the Annual General Meeting will hold elections.
It is known that Ashraf has the support of Afghanistan’s patron-in-chief for the position that he is predicted to win with little opposition when the board holds its next election in December.
The election is anticipated to be conducted in accordance with the international norms and the ACB constitution, wherein the board members will choose the new chairman via an open and transparent voting procedure during the AGM.
