(Cricket news) The visitors West Indies found themselves in trouble after being put into bat by the Aussies in the First Test at the Adelaide oval. The Aussie captain Pat Cummins inflicted two quick wickets at the start dismissing his opposite number Braithwaite and Chanderpaul inside the first hour of the Day 1.
Pat Cummins and Hazelwood then ran through the West Indies middle and lower order, triggering a collapse of 5 for 26 before a gritty 44-run unbeaten stand for the final wicket took the visitors to 177/9 in the extended afternoon session on the opening day of the Test.
Kirk McKenzie and the debutant Kavem Hodge tried to stitch a partnership for the 4th wicket, but it did not last for too long as Hodge was dismissed by Hazelwood. The two added 46 runs to the scoreboard before West Indies were reduced for 98/4 soon after the Lunch break. McKenzie though managed to score a valuable fifty before Hazelwood got one to straighten from round the wicket and got him out Caught behind.
On the other side of drinks Hazlewood picked up his fourth when the second West Indies debutant Justin Greaves lazily drove away from the body to offer a regulation catch to Marnus Labuschagne at short cover. Cummins then struck twice to dismiss Joshua De Silva and Alzarri Joseph in successive overs and further added to the woes for West Indies, leaving them reeling at 133/9.
The afternoon session was extended by half an hour as only a solitary wicket was left, but Shamar Joseph had different plans. He decided to frustrate the Australians and entertain the crowd as he took on Hazelwood’s short ball ploy and scored some valuable boundaries and smoked a maximum for the visitors. Lyon got the final wicket for the Aussies as West Indies were all out for 188 runs. The no. 11’s gutsy knock was in stark contrast to the other batters, who kept wasting their starts after getting their eye in.
Brief scores: West Indies 188/10 (Kirk McKenie 50, Shamar Joseph 36; Josh Hazlewood 4-44, Pat Cummins 4-41)
