(Football News) MLS enthusiasts will need to exercise a bit more patience before witnessing Lionel Messi’s inaugural regular-season appearance with Inter Miami CF.

The scheduled encounter between Miami and Charlotte FC on August 20th, which was set to mark Messi’s debut in MLS play, has been deferred to an unspecified future date. This decision was made following the advancement of both teams to the Leagues Cup quarterfinals.

Inter Miami is slated to compete against Charlotte in the quarterfinals at DRV PNK Stadium on Friday. The outcome of this clash will determine whether one of the clubs proceeds to either the final or the third-place match on August 19th.

As of now, Messi’s anticipated first MLS appearance is projected to occur on Saturday, August 26th, when Inter Miami faces the New York Red Bulls.

Furthermore, Messi is also scheduled to partake in the US Open Cup on August 23rd, as Inter Miami visits the current MLS frontrunners, FC Cincinnati, for a semifinal encounter.

In the previous week’s round of 16 elimination game against Dallas, Messi demonstrated his prowess by scoring from a free kick. This equalizing goal ultimately led to a victory in a penalty shootout, marking Messi’s third consecutive two-goal game for Inter Miami.

Notably, Messi’s 85th-minute goal in that match bore striking resemblance to his game-winning goal in his debut appearance for Inter Miami. On both occasions, he adeptly maneuvered free kicks from just outside the penalty box, successfully evading the goalkeeper and finding the upper corner of the net.

It’s worth mentioning that Messi has made his presence felt in all four matches he has participated in for Inter Miami, accumulating a total of seven goals. Remarkably, his new American club boasts a perfect record of 4-0, all within the context of the Leagues Cup, which starkly contrasts with their prior nine-match winless streak in MLS before the arrival of the 36-year-old football icon.

Having secured the Ballon d’Or, the most esteemed individual accolade in the soccer world, on seven occasions, Messi inked his contract with Miami last month after a two-year stint with Paris Saint-Germain. Throughout his illustrious career spanning over 17 years with Argentina’s national team, Messi has impressively amassed more than 100 goals.

He inked a deal spanning 2 and a half seasons, with an annual worth ranging from $50 million to $60 million, resulting in a cumulative contract value of $125 million to $150 million in direct monetary compensation.
