Messi Hints at Manager Role, 2026 WC Uncertain

Now that he is 37 years old, Lionel Messi is no longer playing in Europe. Recently, the Argentine, who is currently at Inter Miami, was questioned about his future. In an interview with Apple TV’s Fabrizio Romano, the 2022 World Cup champion was asked if he intended to pursue coaching after retirement.

“When I retire, I do not intend to work as a manager. “This is not something I’m thinking about,” he said bluntly.

“I value a lot more than before everything I do daily, so the only thing that I’m thinking about is playing, training and enjoying myself,” he stated.

Despite being a vital component of Inter Miami this season, injuries kept him from playing in every game. However, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suarez made up for it, propelling Miami to the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

The former Barcelona player was also questioned about his plans to play in the US, Canada, and Mexico at the 2026 World Cup.

“I have been asked a number of times, particularly in Argentina, and the fact is that I have no idea. I didn’t have a nice preseason last season because of all the traveling we did, so I’m hoping for a strong season finale,” he remarked.

“I want to see what transpires and how I feel after that. In football, a lot of things always happen. I’m not thinking about it too much because there’s still a long way to go. He went on, “I’m going to live day by day without giving the future too much thought.”

Messi scored his first hat-trick for Inter Miami in a 6-2 victory over the New England Revolution in the season’s last game. In addition, he became Inter Miami’s all-time top scorer at the end of the regular season, finishing with 20 goals and 16 assists in 19 games.
