Toronto (Tennis news): In Men’s Singles, Daniil Medvedev received a strong boost ahead of the US Open as he won his fourth Masters 1000 title without much struggle by capturing the National Bank Open. He defeated Reily Opelka 6-4, 6-3 as he captured his 12th tour title. The Russian had earlier defeated John Isner 6-2,6-4 for a second consecutive final in Toronto. Opelka had a tougher passage as he faced Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi final, the American secured his first victory against a top five player on tour. It wasn't an easy victory as he fought hard for 2 and half hours for a three set over the Greek god. Toronto saw an American finalist after 10 years, the last being Mardy Fish. Opelka had 46 winners and 17 aces that proved to be strong machinery against Tsitsipas.
In Women’s Singles, Camila Giorgi captured her first Masters 1000 title with a well deserved victory over fourth seed Karolina Pliskova. This is the third consecutive victory for Giorgi over Pliskova, her last victory came in the third round of the Tokyo Olympic Games. Giorgi has been in fascinating form as he dropped her first set of the tournament in the semifinals against Jessica Pegula. She advanced into her 1st Masters finals by defeating Jessica 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. While the Wimbledon semi final rematch of Karolina Pliskova and Aryna Sabalenka saw Pliskova prevailing for the second time. She beat her opponent 6-3, 6-4 to make it to the finals.
In Men’s Doubles, Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram defeated top seed Nikola Mektić and Mate Pavić 6-3, 4-6, 10-3. This was their first Masters 1000 title as a team and had lost their last 4 meetings with the top seed. In the semifinals Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram beat Sander Gillé and Joran Vliegen 6-3,7-5 to progress into the final. The top seeds had to battle hard with Kevin Krawietz and Horia Tecău to earn their place in the final. They needed two tie breaks to earn a place in the final, the scoreline read 7-6(7-3), 7-6(14-12).
In Women’s Doubles, Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani won the title by defeating Andreja Klepač and Darija Jurak 6-4, 6-3 in the final. They had secured a comfortable victory against Elena Rybakina and Veronika Kudermetova. In the other semifinal Andreja Klepač and Darija Jura had little trouble in the first as they overcame Bernarda Pera and Magda Linette for a place in the final.
