(Football news) Marco Asensio played his last game for Real Madrid against Athletic Club. The club had offered him a renewal but Asensio rejected him because he wanted more game time. Asensio has had a decent season but despite that he has been mostly used as a substitute. Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard and Mariano also said their goodbyes as they are also leaving the club. Marco Asensio will most likely join Paris Saint-Germain despite interest from Aston Villa. The Spaniard will earn more money and even get more game time with the Ligue 1 club.

Marco Asensio Real Madrid career sky rocketed in his very first season where scored on every single competition debut after he was signed in 2017. Asensio scored in his first La Liga game, Copa Del Rey game, Champions League game, UEFA Super Cup game and Spanish Super Cup game. He even scored in the Champions League final among other big games. The season after Cristiano Ronaldo left was tough for the whole team and Marco Asensio also didn’t perform well.  An ACL tear in the 2019 pre-season sidelined him for almost a year. In his comeback game against Valencia in June 2020, Asensio scored with his first touch of the game, but it has all been downhill ever since.

After ACL surgery, Asensio as expected lost quite a bit of pace and acceleration which meant that he always struggled on the wing. His best ability is to hit from distance which he was struggling to do in Zinedine Zidane’s wide winger system. Carlo Ancelotti played him in midfield for a couple of games and it worked very well but with the midfield being stacked he had to play on the wing again. He was supposed to be the next best thing at the Spanish capital but it hasn’t worked out too well. Now he will look to play more regularly at his new club to put his name on top once again.
