Manchester United’s wonderkid’s career comes to an end at the club

Mason Greenwood, a forward for Manchester United, is supposedly scheduled to have a physical with Marseille before committing to a long-term deal with the European powerhouse
Manchester

Earlier this year, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Manchester United’s new minority stakeholder, hinted that there might be a way to get the Red Devils academy product back into the first squad at Old Trafford.

The 20-time English champions, however, have finally made the decision to allow him to depart permanently.

Although Greenwood has been linked to a number of teams, including Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Lazio, it appears that Marseille has emerged victorious in the competition for his services, as a deal is expected to be finalized soon.

Greenwood ‘to undergo’ Marseille medical

Mason Greenwood has already agreed personal terms with the French outfit, while a transfer fee of around £25.2m has been settled on between the two clubs.

The report claims that the Englishman will undergo a medical before signing a contract until June 2029, while Manchester United have also inserted a ‘significant’ sell-on clause into the deal.

Greenwood has not turned out for Manchester United since January 2022, with the forward being suspended by the club two years ago due to serious allegations from a woman.

The forward was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault, and he was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

Greenwood’s Manchester United career is over

The Englishman was also facing charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but the case against him was officially dropped last February.

Greenwood was therefore allowed to resume his career during the 2023-24 campaign, with Getafe signing him on loan despite opposition.

Manchester United are believed to have initially decided to bring him back into their first-team set-up last year but changed their mind at the final moment due to the backlash from the public.

Greenwood is set to leave the 20-time English champions with a record of 35 goals and 12 assists in 129 appearances in all competitions.

The forward’s sale will count as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules due to the fact that he came through the academy system at Old Trafford.
