(Football news) On Wednesday, Manchester United’s pitiful EFL Cup defense came to an end when they lost 3-0 at home to Newcastle United, while their hosts advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Ipswich Town 3-1.

Top-flight matches between Fulham and Ipswich Town might be on the menu for 2024–25 if the Tractor Boys of Ipswich Town continue to leave Championship opponents in their wake. However, Marco Silva’s team gave their second-tier hosts a hard reality check in the EFL Cup.

Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton will not want to watch the former or latter’s goals return. Despite all of Ipswich’s accomplishments in the final third, the Tractor Boys have frequently forgotten to keep the back door closed. Fulham took full advantage on Wednesday evening as Harry Wilson, Rodrigo Muniz, and Tom Cairney made the net bulge.

Elkan Baggott’s header in the 79th minute came too late to spark a comeback, and although Fulham’s matchup with Everton in the semifinals will offer a spot in the semis, Silva’s Cottagers’ first aim now is to restore some much-needed top-flight consistency.

In their most recent match in the Premier League, Fulham held Brighton & Hove Albion to a 1-1 draw, preventing the Seagulls from winning the league for the first time and sending the Seagulls down to 14th position. This was made possible by a goal from Joao Palhinha and an overall dominant performance by the touch-tackling Portuguese.

The Premier League’s current standings—three wins, three draws, and four losses—can definitely be characterized as a mixed bag. Two of the team’s victories have occurred at Craven Cottage, but the other teams’ losers were freshly promoted Luton Town and Sheffield United.

Newcastle gave the Red Devils the same kind of beating in the EFL Cup, and if the Old Trafford panic button had not already been touched following a terrifying 3-0 derby loss to Manchester City, Red Devils executives may now be teetering dangerously above the red switch.

A little more than eight months after losing to Man United’s dominance at Wembley, Newcastle caused a few more walls of the Old Trafford stronghold to collapse. The Red Devils surrendered their title with a meek display thanks to goals from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall’s incredible volley, and an unstoppable Joe Willock run and finish.
