Manchester United identify replacement for Alejandro Garnacho

Manchester United intends to let go of Alejandro Garnacho before the January transfer window closes and replace him with highly regarded attacker Mathys Tel, who will be loaned from Bayern Munich
Manchester

(Football news) Tel has expressed a desire to leave Bayern before the winter market closes, and there is now a scramble for his services, with Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all believed to be keen on the forward.

Tottenham are said to have agreed a €60m (£50.2m) fee with Bayern for Tel, but it remains to be seen whether the 19-year-old accepts a switch to North London, as it has been suggested that he favors a move to Old Trafford.

Despite news of Tottenham’s bid being accepted, it is understood that Manchester United remain firmly in the race, with the Red Devils looking to bring in the Frenchman on loan in the final stages of the January window.

According to multiple reports, Manchester United are aiming to sell Garnacho and bring in Tel before the window closes, and it is set to be a busy end to the market for the 20-time English champions.

Manchester United ‘looking to sign Tel as Garnacho replacement’

The report claims that Tel could still arrive if Garnacho stays, but an exit for the latter would drastically improve Man United’s financial situation, as his sale would count as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

Chelsea and Napoli continue to be credited with an interest in the Argentina international, who is said to be valued by the Red Devils in the region of £60m, but the club are yet to receive an offer near their asking price.

Garnacho is allegedly ‘preparing to leave Old Trafford’ this weekend, with Napoli still firmly in the race despite suggestions that the Italian outfit had cooled their interest in the former Atletico Madrid youngster.

The forward has scored eight goals and registered six assists in 35 appearances for Manchester United during the 2024-25 campaign, and he came off the bench to provide an assist in his side’s 2-0 victory over FCSB in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Would Tel be a good signing for Man United?

Tel has struggled to make his mark during the 2024-25 campaign, only managing one assist in 14 appearances, but he showed his potential for Bayern last term, scoring 10 goals and registering six assists in 41 outings in all competitions.

The Frenchman primarily operates down the left, but he can also play as a centre-forward, giving Man United head coach Ruben Amorim options in the final third of the field.

However, selling Garnacho would be a widely unpopular decision among the club’s supporters, and moving Marcus Rashford out before the deadline could allow Tel to arrive without the need to let the Argentina international leave.

Man United are also expecting to conclude a deal for Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu over the weekend.
