(Football news) In a shocking upset in the Carabao Cup, West Ham knocked out Manchester United with a 1-0 at Old Trafford to progress to Round 4. Former Man Utd manager David Moyes won his first game against the Red Devils since he was sacked and West Ham have failed to defeat Manchester United on 17 occasions, with the last win coming due to a Carlos Tevez goal in May 2007.
Both the sides made a combined 21 changes to their team and West Ham scored a goal in the ninth minute when Ryan Fredericks completely blindsided left back Alex Telles for Lanzini to coolly finish in the far corner. Jon Moss made a controversial decision when Jesse Lingard was not awarded a penalty after the midfielder was pulled back by Mark Noble in the box. Despite 27 shots on goal, Manchester United failed to convert any opportunities, despite the introduction of Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes in the second half. It was West Ham who looked more likely to double their lead towards the end of the match when Yarmolenko hit the post in the 86th minute and Dean Henderson denied Bowen an opportunity. West Ham will now face Manchester City in Round 4 of the Carabao Cup.
The clash between Chelsea and Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge was full of drama as the Blues prevailed 4-3 on penalties to progress into the last 16 of the competition. Goals from Timo Werner and Cameron Archer could not separate the two sides in normal time and the game progressed to penalty shootouts. Aston Villa’s Ashley Young and Marvelous Nakamba missed from the spot, giving Reece James an opportunity to win the match with a decisive goal. With this result, Chelsea will host Southampton in Round 4 of the Carabao Cup on October 26 or 27.
Meanwhile at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal outclassed AFC Wimbledon 3-0 to progress into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Keeping one eye on the crucial Premier League clash against Tottenham this weekend, Mikel Arteta made ten changes to his side and it paid dividends. Alexandre Lacazette converted from the spot when Gabriel Martinelli had been brought down in the 10th minute. The hosts could not extend their lead for the majority of the game as AFC Wimbledon were defensively solid until substitute Emile Smith Rowe scored Arsenal’s second goal in the 77th minute before Eddie Nketiah made it 3-0 in the 80th minute. Arsenal will now face Leeds United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on October 26 or 27.
In a closely contested match at the Molineux Stadium between two Premier League sides, Spurs managed to defeat Wolves 3-2 on penalties after blowing a 2-0 lead. Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele gave Tottenham a comfortable two goal cushion, only for Dendoncker and Daniel Podence to bring the hosts level at normal time. As the game progressed to penalty shoot-outs, Ruben Neves, Leander Dendoncker and Conor Coady missed from the spot for last season’s runner ups to progress into the next round to face Burnley.
