(Football news) There are multiple Manchester United stars whose contracts are ending in 2024 after the club opted to initiate the one-year extension option. After a disappointing last season, manager Erik ten Hag has impressed everyone and has got the best out of a few players this season. Dalot’s future at the club looked dicey before the Dutch manager’s arrival but his performances has prompted the United hierarchy to begin negotiations for a new long-term contract. Multiple reports had linked him with a move to either Real Madrid or Barcelona in the summer.
The Portugal international revealed that he was happy at the club and desired to stay at the club for the long term. Fabrizio Romano revealed that Dalot and United are close to a breakthrough in contract extension talks and it is only a matter of time before he signs a new long-term deal with the club. The former Porto man was almost an ever-present member of the team prior to the World Cup as he missed only one game due to suspension as Aaron Wan-Bissaka hardly got a look-in the playing XI
The 24-year-old this season has made 41 appearances across all competitions as he started 37 of them. He has had the most productive season where he contributed two goals and three assists. Erik Ten Hag loves him for his adaptability as he allows him to play on either side of defence when required, with versatility a trait that he admires a lot. In the last few matches with Varane and Martinez both out, he played at left back as Luke Shaw shifted to centre defence and he excelled in a unconventional role for the Portuguese international
The Braga-born footballer is valued at somewhere around €35 million and United will be more than happy to tie down yet another defender after Luke Shaw‘s recent contract extension. Now once the contract extension with Dalot is done all the focus will shift to Rashford’s new contract, which has not become Ten Hag’s number 1 priority but also the club hierarchy see him as the face of the club. Fans will be hoping that Dalot can regain the supreme form he was in during first-half of the season. Dalot recently lost his place to Wan-Bissaka and has not started in the last three games.
“Manchester United are advancing in talks to extend Diogo Dalot’s contract. Club plan remains to keep Dalot and get a new long term deal done. There’s confidence to reach an agreement soon,” the Italian tweeted.
