Manchester United are in concrete talks to replace Onana

Emiliano Martinez, an Argentina international, is rumoured to have "made a concrete move" to Manchester United for the custodian from Aston Villa, possibly joining the team this summer
Manchester

(Football news) Martinez, 32, has been heavily linked with a switch to the Red Devils since the opening of the transfer window.

Andre Onana has been Manchester United’s number one goalkeeper since his arrival from Inter Milan in 2023, but the Cameroon international has largely struggled to show his best form for the English giants.

Onana is currently on the sidelines with a hamstring injury that could keep him out until the end of August, while there is uncertainty surrounding his future in Manchester.

Manchester United’s number two goalkeeper Altay Bayindir may also be on the move this summer, with the Turkey international looking for first-team football at this stage of his career.

Man United ‘make a move’ for Villa goalkeeper Martinez
According to multiple reports and sources, Manchester United have now ‘made a move’ for Martinez, as the Red Devils look to bring in the World Cup winner as their new number one.

There has been no mention of a potential transfer fee, although previous reports have claimed that Villa would be looking for a figure in the region of £40m for the 32-year-old.

Martinez would not be a long-term option between the sticks, but Manchester United need a reliable presence during a turbulent period, and the South American has developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Since making the move to Villa from Arsenal in September 2020, Martinez has represented the Lions on 212 occasions in all competitions, keeping 70 clean sheets in the process.

Will Onana leave Man United this summer?
The situation regarding Onana has been complicated by the fact that he will be out for at least another month with a hamstring injury, so there is not anything imminent when it comes to an exit.

Martinez would not be signed as a number two, while Onana would also not want to drop down to second choice, so if the former is signed, it is incredibly difficult to imagine the latter staying at Old Trafford.

There is not an obvious suitor at this moment in time, though, and Man United’s struggles in terms of selling unwanted players could continue with Onana.

It is clear that the 20-time English champions need a new goalkeeper, and Martinez has the potential to be an excellent signing for Ruben Amorim’s side, but whether Onana’s time at Old Trafford will end this summer remains to be seen.
