(Football news) It was another action packed weekend of Premier League fixtures, full of goals, controversies and drama. While history would suggest a fixture between Manchester City against Arsenal would be considered ‘a clash between two heavyweights’ it was anything but so. The clear gap in quality between the two sides was evident from the get go as the Premier League champions scored five past the Gunners at the Etihad stadium.
Arsenal have a terrible record against Manchester City, losing their last eight Premier League fixtures against them. On top of that, Mikel Arteta’s team have now lost their first three opening games of the season for the first time ever, scoring 0 goals and finding themselves firmly at the absolute bottom of the Premier League table. It didn’t take long for City to open the scoring when Ilkay Gundogan found the back of the net in the 7th minute with a header. Man City doubled the score five minutes later due to some terrible defending by Arsenal which helped Ferran Torres score from close range.
To make matters worse, Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka saw a red card for his two footed lunge on Joao Cancelo. Two minutes into the second half, Gabriel Jesus scored the third goal followed by Rodri to make it 4-0. Torres scored his second goal of the match later with a header as Arsenal looked helpless with 0 shots on target. City will next face a more challenging opponent in Leicester City at the King Power stadium while Arsenal will face Norwich City, desperately looking to turn their season around at any cost.
At Anfield, Liverpool took on Chelsea in a clash between two title favourites. Kai Havertz opened the scoring for Chelsea with a fantastic looping header in the 22nd minute. However, the Blues were reduced to 10 men as Reece James was sent off three minutes into added time at the end of the first half when he handled the ball, preventing Sadio Mane’s shot from reaching the back of the net. Edouard Mendy and Antonio Rudiger also received yellow cards due to their reaction to the sending off. Mohamed Salah converted his penalty to level the scoring as Chelsea were left fuming after Anthony Taylor’s decision. Despite an intense game, the two sides failed to break the deadlock in the second half with Chelsea replacing Havertz and Kante at the break and employing a more defensive and counter-attacking strategy after being reduced to 10 men. Both sides received one point as a result and are now in the fourth and fifth position respectively.
At the Molineux Stadium, Manchester United’s new signings Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane made their full debuts. The Red Devils were absolutely dreadful in the first half, failing to create any clear cut chances and only stayed in the game due to luck and Wolves’ inability to kill off the game. Manchester United were so bad, it could very easily have been an embarrassing scoreline with Fred having a shocker of a performance. Football can be a cruel sport and despite all the effort from Wolves, it was Manchester United who scored first when 19 year old Mason Greenwood found the back of the net 10 minutes before full time for his third of the season in three games. With this result, Manchester United are now 28 games unbeaten across England’s four professional leagues, a new record. However, the time has come for this Manchester United side to lift trophies and if new records are made in the process then all the better.
