Malaba Community Mourns Igody’s Loss

The sudden death of former Boca Juniors striker and prolific goal scorer Godfrey Karakach Igody, also known as Rasta, has left the Malaba soccer community in mourning. According to reports, he was found dead at his Malaba rental home under mysterious circumstances, according to former Boca Juniors coach Altaf Bachu.

In a friendly game in Mumias in 2008, when the Boca Juniors under-13 squad won 7-1 and Igody scored an outstanding four goals, Bachu remembers first seeing Igody’s talent at the young age of 11.

When the club participated in a competition in Malaba a year later, scouts from English Premier League powerhouses Liverpool took notice of his growing skill. Even though the hosts Hirens defeated Boca’s U-13 team in the championship game, Igody’s profile was raised by the publicity.

His reputation was further cemented when Boca’s under-13 team won 13 of 14 games in a tournament later hosted by the Nzoia junior team, which was an incredible accomplishment for the young players’ careers.

Igody left a lasting impression on then-coach Francis Barasa after advancing to the senior squad, but coaching staff changes ended his dreams. Moses Imai, who took over as head coach of the senior squad in 2017 along with Okoit Lok’Etyang, praised Igody as an exceptional player who could score goals with incredible accuracy.

“Despite still being a valuable asset to the team, Igody’s outstanding performances before retiring helped lead Boca Junior to Division I,” Imai said. He also played in games against Kenyan Premier League teams Nzoia and Kakamega Home Boyz, as well as Ugandan teams Mbale Heroes and MIDA.

Eugene Okello, the head of the Football Kenya Federation Busia Branch, sent a statement of condolences, expressing deep sadness and the federation’s sincere sympathies to the Malaba community, the Boca Junior FC, and Igody’s family during this trying time.
