Mahmoud Dahoud joins Brighton on a free transfer in a surprise move

Six years after he joined Borussia Dortmund, German international Mahmoud Dahoud is leaving the club to join high flying Brighton Hove & Albion

(Football news) After six years he joined Borussia Dortmund from Borussia Monchengladbach, Mahmoud Dahoud is set to leave the club on a free transfer. According to Fabrizio Romano, the German international has already completed his medical in London and is ready to sign a new contract with Brighton & Hove Albion. Once the move is completed, he will be the third player joining them in the summer after the signings of Joao Pedro from Watford and the free transfer of James Milner from Liverpool.

Mahmoud Dahoud will mostly be a replacement for Alexis Mac Allister who is all set to leave this summer and move to a bigger club. The German midfielder always had loads of technical skill, but he never seemed able to cement himself in Dortmund’s starting XI. His Dortmund career was plagued with injuries, inconsistent play, or a lack of trust between himself and whichever coach who has been in charge. In his six seasons he has averaged less than 1,000 minutes per season in the Bundesliga.

This season even despite Dortmund’s various injuries in the midfield, Dahoud has played less than 400 minutes only. It looks like Dahoud has completely fallen out of favor with Edin Terzic and clubs fans have become very irritated with his inconsistency, they know he is a talented player but his work ethic and dedication to play for the club was being questioned, hence it was a matter of time before he left Dortmund. Many BVB fans have criticized his inconsistent play, his tendencies to give the ball away and constantly taking ill-advised long shots.

Dahoud who recently turned 27 only has a few more years of his prime remaining. It made sense for him to change clubs rather than spend those years wasting away on the bench. In Brighton he could play for a very good manager in De Zerbi and also it is a well-run Premier League club, which is subsequently perfect for his career. With both Dahoud and Jude Bellingham leaving, Dortmund are in a bit of rut as they will need to make multiple midfield signings this summer, or they will again lag behind Bayern in the Champions League.
