(Football news) Aston Villa announced that they have signed Ludwig Augustinsson on a season-long loan deal from Spanish side Sevilla. The 28-year-old Sweden international featured 27 times for Sevilla during the 2021/22 season. This included several appearances in the Champions League. Augustinsson has gone on to make 46 senior appearances for Sweden and he also played the full 90 minutes in three Nations League games for Sweden last month. He has spent just one season in La Liga after joining from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen in the summer of 2021.
Villa have also signed fellow Sevilla defender Diego Carlos, midfielder Boubacar Kamara and goalkeeper Robin Olsen last month, while Philippe Coutinho’s loan move from Barcelona was made permanent in early May. The Sweden international becomes Aston Villa’s fifth signing of the summer and will offer some much needed competition to Lucas Digne at left-back. Numerous left backs had been linked with a move to Villa Park throughout the transfer window following the sale of Matt Targett. Augustinsson has agreed a 12-month temporary switch with no permanent buy option in his contract.
He began his career with Stockholm side IF Brommapojkarna before moving to IFK Goteborg, Augustinsson is a player who is already well-known to Villa’s sporting director Johan Lange as the defender spent two-and-a-half seasons with Lange’s former club Copenhagen before making his big move to Werder Bremen in 2017. He will be providing quality competition as the likes of Ashley Young can also offer cover at left-back, having recently signed a new contract, while academy players Ben Chrisene and Seb Revan have been called up for their pre-season at Walsall. A move for Augustinsson was first discussed over the weekend and has helped solve a priority position for Villa boss Steven Gerrard. The full-back is in the process of obtaining a work permit and will likely join up the team for pre-season camp in Australia after his move is finalised.
Villa said via their official website: “Aston Villa can confirm that the club has reached an agreement with Sevilla FC for the season-long loan of Ludwig Augustinsson. The player has begun the process of obtaining a work permit.”
