(Football news) Union SG still has a chance to place in the top two and go to the knockout stages, even though the Reds are already guaranteed a berth in the last 16 as group champions.
Union SG is participating in the Europa League for the first time ever, but after a goalless draw with Toulouse on matchday five two weeks ago, they have little chance of making it to the knockout stages for the second year in a row.
In order to advance to the knockout stages, Alexander Blessin’s team, who currently sit third in Group E with five points from as many games, needs to pull off a massive upset against Liverpool in their final group match and hope that Toulouse, who is in second place, loses to LASK Linz.
If Union SG places third in the group, they will advance to the Europa Conference League playoffs; however, if they position fourth, they will be eliminated from Europe entirely.
Following their tie with Toulouse, Union SG has won all three of their domestic matches by a combined score of 7-2. This includes their 3-1 triumph against Charleroi on the road last weekend, which allowed Blessin’s team to take a six-point lead atop the Belgian Pro League.
The team from Brussels is attempting to win back-to-back Europa League home games for the first time after defeating LASK Linz 2-1 in October. However, they have not won any of their previous three encounters with English opponents, including the September rematch against the Reds at Anfield, where they lost 2-0.
