(Football news) Dominik Szoboszlai’s rocket in the first half gave the Reds the lead, and shortly after the break, man-of-the-match Curtis Jones scored Liverpool’s 500th EFL Cup goal from a very close angle.
The Merseysiders led three goals thanks to a brutal finish from Cody Gakpo halfway through the second half. Six minutes later, Jarrod Bowen showed his class with a stunning shot to give the Hammers a point back.
But just before Jones scored his second goal of the evening to crown a great performance from Jurgen Klopp’s team, substitute Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead and guaranteed their place in a record 19th EFL Cup semi-final.
Caoimhin Kelleher, Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah, Harvey Elliott, Jones, and Gakpo were all given starts while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Salah were moved to the bench as Liverpool made six changes to the team that was forced to play out a goalless draw with Manchester United in the Premier League last weekend.
In addition, David Moyes made six changes to his West Ham starting lineup after the team’s 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. Lucas Paqueta, who had three assists the previous time out, started as a substitute. Alphonse Areola, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Angelo Ogbonna, Ben Johnson, Pablo Fornals, and Said Benrahma were all added to the starting XI.
