The German team’s CEO, Fernando Carro, disclosed the club’s intentions with regard to its star player.
With every transfer window, Bayer Leverkusen has become used to having its coach and players in the spotlight. Top European teams regularly have Frimpong, Tah, and Xabi Alonso on their radar lists, but none are as uncertain as Florian Wirtz.
Jonathan Tah is now scheduled to depart on a free transfer in June, and Bayern Munich is one of the teams most likely to recruit the defender. Liverpool and a number of other Premier League powerhouses are interested in Frimpong, while Xabi Alonso seems destined to take over as Real Madrid’s coach in the future, though it’s still unclear when this will happen.
On the other side, many people want Wirtz. The midfield player has been linked to Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and PSG, and the bidding battle for his services might be historic. In spite of this, recent German sources indicated that the playmaker was close to extending his Leverkusen contract, which is now set to expire in 2027.
However, in an interview with Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, Fernando Carro revealed important information about Wirtz’s future. First of all, he ruled out the possibility of the German talent’s contract being renewed.
“I would have been pleased if it had been true,” Carro acknowledged…. The CEO also disclosed a possible departure date for Wirtz: “It makes sense to extend the contract because the club wants him to stay in Leverkusen at least until the 2026 World Cup.”
Carro did concede, though, that it would be difficult for Wirtz to stay with the team this summer if he does not extend: “It will be tough, to be honest.” Although it’s not impossible, we don’t want that.
It’s interesting to note that Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen contract also expires in June 2026. It is well known that the Tolosan manager would be thrilled to take over at the Bernabéu, and that Madrid is interested in making him their replacement for Carlo Ancelotti, whose contract also expires that year.
Even though Wirtz’s position is quite similar to Bellingham’s, Madrid is still very interested in him, and Xabi Alonso might be a key tool in persuading the player.
Regarding the coach’s continuity for the forthcoming season, Fernando Carro is currently clear: “We expect him to stay. No indications to the contrary are present. Our relationship with him, his family, and his agent is one of trust and closeness. He has one more year and a half left on his deal. He participates in all planning and procedures as usual, even outside of this season.
