Jon Lewis Steps Down as England Women’s Head Coach

Jon Lewis has officially stepped down from his role as head coach of the England Women’s cricket team, the ECB confirmed on Friday. His departure comes in the wake of a comprehensive 16-0 Women’s Ashes defeat in Australia and a disappointing group-stage exit at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup last October — both currently under review by the ECB.

Lewis, who took on the role in November 2022, expressed mixed emotions in a farewell statement.

“I’ve truly enjoyed my time leading the England Women’s team,” he said. “It’s unfortunate that I won’t be able to complete the journey of building this talented young group while competing for victories and helping grow the women’s game across the country.”

“I’ve worked relentlessly with this squad to enhance their skills and deepen their understanding of modern white-ball cricket. Despite recent setbacks, we made strong progress in 2024, winning 83% of our matches. I’m proud of the record-breaking crowds we’ve seen in 2023 and 2024, and I remain passionate about contributing to the growth of women’s cricket in whatever comes next for me. I thank the players for allowing me to be a part of their journey and wish them continued success.”

ECB Managing Director of England Women and Deputy CEO Clare Connor, who had launched the post-Ashes review, thanked Lewis for his contributions.

“I’d like to thank Jon for his dedication and the work he put in during his time as head coach,” she said. “He stepped into the role following a difficult post-pandemic period and made it a priority to create an environment where players could grow and succeed.”

“Under his guidance, the team held off Australia in a gripping 2023 Women’s Ashes series, which drew record crowds and showcased an exciting brand of cricket. His leadership also delivered consistent success in bilateral series, including an outstanding run of eight consecutive ODI series victories — something he deserves a lot of credit for.”

“While recent tournaments have been disappointing, the talent within the squad is undeniable. We’ll begin the process of appointing a new head coach soon, with a big summer of international cricket ahead and two World Cups to prepare for in the next 15 months — including the T20 World Cup on home soil next year.”

During his tenure, Lewis oversaw 73 matches, with England Women winning 52 of them.
