(Tennis news) Jannik Sinner overcame Carlos Alcaraz 6-7 6-4 6-2 to reach the final of the Miami Open where he will face Daniil Medvedev. The result meant that the Spaniard will now drop from his World Number 1 position on Monday and will be overtaken by Novak Djokovic. Meanwhile, Russian player Medvedev has now become the first player since 1981 to reach his fifth ATP finals after defeating countryman Karen Khachanov 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 6-3 in the semi-final.

He will now take on Sinner after the World Number 11 fought back from trailing by two break points at 3-4 down in the second set. The 21 year old overcame Alcaraz by claiming 19 of 21 points to take a 2-0 advantage. Alcaraz suffered cramps in the final set of the match and briefly rallied but couldn’t maintain his intensity against Sinner. Speaking after the match, Alcaraz said “I started to feel better but of course Jannik was better than me in the third set. That’s the truth.” Alcaraz had defeated Sinner in straight sets at Indian Wells in March and was the favourite in this match.

In the women’s category, Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova beat Sorana Cirstea to reach the Miami Open final. The 33 year old won 7-5 6-4 to defeat her Romanian opponent who had a surprising run at the ATP event. Kvitova bounced back from facing two set points at 5-4 in the opener and will now take on Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina in Saturday’s final with the aim of ending her 13 game unbeaten streak.
