India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has decided to switch teams for the upcoming domestic season, moving from Mumbai to Goa. The move came as a surprise to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), which promptly issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) after receiving Jaiswal’s transfer request.

Goa Cricket Association (GCA) secretary Shambu Desai confirmed that it was GCA that initiated contact with Jaiswal. “We are building a strong squad for Goa and wanted to bring in top talent, which is why we approached him recently,” Desai told ESPNcricinfo.

Jaiswal, 23, has been a key player for Mumbai since his Under-19 days. Since making his first-class debut in 2019, he has played ten first-class matches for Mumbai, amassing 863 runs at an average of 53.93, including four centuries and a highest score of 181 against Uttar Pradesh in 2022.

He played a pivotal role in Mumbai’s 2021-22 Ranji Trophy campaign, scoring three consecutive centuries en route to the final, where they finished runners-up to Madhya Pradesh. In List A cricket, he has scored 1296 runs in 25 matches at an average of 58.90, while in T20s, he has 648 runs from 28 games at a strike rate of 136.42.

Jaiswal’s last appearance for Mumbai was against Jammu and Kashmir in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, where he registered scores of 4 and 26. He was set to play in Mumbai’s semi-final against Vidarbha but was sidelined due to a right ankle injury sustained during training. His move to Goa follows in the footsteps of players like Siddesh Lad and Arjun Tendulkar, who also made similar transfers from Mumbai.

Jaiswal made his India debut in July 2023 against the West Indies, scoring 171 in his maiden innings. He later registered a double century against England in 2024. While a regular in India’s Test and T20I squads, he has played just one ODI. Though not included in India’s Champions Trophy squad, he remains among the non-traveling reserves.

Currently, Jaiswal is featuring for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL 2025 but has endured a slow start, scoring 1, 29, and 4 in his first three innings. RR’s next match is against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on April 5.
