(Football News) Inter Miami announced on Wednesday that they have appointed Gerardo Martino as their new coach, bringing together the Argentine coach with his fellow countryman Lionel Messi.
Having previously coached Messi at Barcelona and during his tenure as the head coach of Argentina from 2013 to 2016, the 60-year-old Martino joins Inter Miami with an impressive track record. Notably, he has won the MLS Cup and earned the MLS Coach of the Year award. In addition to his stints with the Argentina and Mexico national teams, Martino has also had coaching experience at Barcelona and various other clubs. While his employment paperwork is being processed, he is set to assume his role at Inter Miami.
Jorge Mas, the managing owner of Inter Miami, expressed his satisfaction with the appointment, stating, “We believe that Gerardo Martino is the ideal coach to fulfill our ambitions, and we are optimistic about the achievements we can attain together. Tata brings extensive coaching experience at the highest levels, and we believe that his expertise will greatly benefit our team.”
Martino returns to coaching after his tenure as the coach of Mexico, which concluded after the World Cup last year. Unfortunately, the national team was eliminated in the group stage, marking their earliest exit from the tournament since 1978.
Previously, Martino served as the head coach of Atlanta United for the team’s first two seasons in the league, where he enjoyed notable success, including winning the MLS Cup in 2018.
David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami, commented on Martino’s appointment, stating, “Tata is a highly respected figure in our sport, and his impressive track record speaks for itself.”
“We are confident that his accomplishments and experience as a coach will serve as an inspiration to our team and excite the fans, and we are excited to see the impact he will have on and off the field.”
