Imran Khan sentenced to 10 years of jail by Pakistan court

(Cricket news) Former Pakistani cricketer ,a world cup winning captain and the former Prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has been sentenced 10 years of imprisonment by the Pakistan court. He has been accused of not returning a diplomatic document, post his removal from the office of Prime Minister in 2022.

A special court convened to hear his case, as well as that of Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a senior figure in Imran’s political party. Both have been now sentenced 10 years of jail. Imran was charged under the Official Secrets Act, a British era law.

The PTI’s (Imran’s political party) official Twitter account issued a statement, calling the ruling “a sham trial and a complete mockery and disregard of law”.

Imran has continuously claimed that the United States of America was behind the no-confidence vote that ousted him from office and that the disputed document demonstrated US diplomatic pressure to remove him. The US news outlet The Intercept, which claimed to have had access to the sensitive material, released an article in response, lending additional credence to this accusation.

The lawyers of both the political figures are set to appeal the sentence at the High court.
