ICC Gives 2023 World Cup Final Pitch an 'Average' Rating: Here's What You Need to Know

(Cricket News) The International Cricket Council (ICC) released their rating for the Ahmedabad pitch and the ones used for the semifinal games on Friday. There was a lot of discussion and debate about the pitch that was used for the 2023 ODI World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where Australia ended hosts India’s undefeated 10-match winning streak to lift the coveted trophy for a record-extending sixth time.

The match between Australia and India on November 19 for the title was played on a used pitch. Australia was put to bat first on a slow pitch and were folded for 240 runs, which was chased down by the Aussies with seven overs to spare thanks to Travis Head’s magnificent century knock.

Australia’s captain Pat Cummins had reportedly voiced concerns about the pitch before the big game, while his India counterpart Rohit Sharma refrained from discussing it. Later, after the match, two-time World Cup winner Ricky Ponting claimed that India’s pitch ploy had “backfired.”

The Ahmedabad track has been rated as “average” by the ICC, which was confirmed by ICC match referee Andy Pycroft. The report also stated that five of India’s eleven matches were played on “averaged-rated” pitches, with the matches against South Africa in Kolkata, England in Lucknow, Pakistan in Ahmedabad, and Australia in Chennai being the matches played on pitches rated “good” by the ICC, as reported by former India bowler Javagak Srinath.

In an earlier report, it was reported that Indian head coach Rahul Dravid and Rohit met with BCCI officials to discuss the team’s performance in the tournament. Dravid then attributed India’s loss in the final to Ahmedabad, claiming that the pitch did not turn as much as the team management had anticipated, which was a major reason why India was unable to strangle Australia in the chase for 241.
