Hasaranga Penalized for Umpire Confrontation for Two T20Is

(Cricket News) The ICC has suspended Sri Lanka’s T20I skipper Wanindu Hasaranga for two matches after he had an altercation with umpire Lyndon Hannibal during the team’s third T20I encounter against Afghanistan on February 21. Hasaranga will miss Sri Lanka’s opening two Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) against Bangladesh in March and was also fined half of his match fees.

Umpire Hannibal failed to declare a high full-toss from Wafadar Momand to Kamindu Mendis as a no-ball, which led to the incident. Although Kamindu had scooted down the pitch, if he had been standing straight at the popping crease, the delivery would have probably landed above his waist. Based on the playing conditions set by the ICC, this would be considered a no-ball.

Hasaranga had stated, “That kind of behavior should not happen in an international competition.” It would not have been an issue if it had been about waist height. However, if the ball had soared a bit higher, it would have struck the batsman’s head. That umpire is not fit for off-season international cricket if you can not see that. If he worked at another job, that would be much better.”

When this happened, Sri Lanka needed 11 runs off the final three deliveries and lost the match by three runs to conclude the series 2-1.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement that Hasaranga was found guilty of violating item 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with “Personal abuse of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire or Match Referee during an International Match.”

“Hasaranga’s three demerit points from this infraction bring his total demerit points to five, which can be converted to two suspension points. This implies that he will be suspended for one Test match, two ODIs, or T20Is, depending on when the player or player support staff ban occurs.”

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the batter for Afghanistan, was also handed one demerit point and fined 15% of his match fee for “disobeying an umpire’s command during an international competition.” According to the ICC, Gurbaz committed the crime of “changing the grip of his bat on the field despite repeated cautions against doing so.” Gurbaz currently has two demerit points.
