• NATIONAL RECORDS FALL ON OPENING DAY OF SEASON

The national records are piling up for Canterbury Magicians legend Frankie Mackay who yesterday added the mantle of leading all-time run-scorer to the all-time wickets record she broke in the same competition, the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, last summer.

The commentating cricketer is now also the top run-scorer for a Domestic team in New Zealand List A cricket, in either men’s or women’s cricket.

The first-round match at Canterbury’s home ground, Rangiora’s Mainpower Oval delivered everything but a win for Mackay as the Magicians crumbled in their chase against the defending champion Otago Sparks – who had earlier posted 198/6 off 36 overs in a rain-reduced match.

The clinical Sparks made a perfect start as they went on to win by 170 runs, which sits in their top four wins all-time by margin of runs, with 19-year-old Louisa Kotkamp claiming a personal best 4/17 in just her second match at this level.

The Sparks were also one of two teams – along with the Central Hinds in Wellington – to pick up a bonus point ahead of today’s second round, against the same opponents in Rangiora, at Mt Maunganui’s Bay Oval and the Cello Basin Reserve.

Twenty-one-year-old Hinds leg-spinner Ocean Bartlett stunned Wellington Blaze in their chase in the capital, bowling them out for 100 in challenging conditions with the fourth best bowling figures in Hinds history and her maiden bag of 6/27.

The Hinds had been defending just 141 in their 41-run win in another weather-reduced contest while further north, Maddy Green’s Auckland Hearts took a good opening victory off hosts Northern Districts, winning by seven wickets after a century stand for the second wicket between Green and opening batter Saachi Shahri.
