Grace Harris made an immediate impact for Surrey in the 2025 Vitality Blast, smashing a rapid half-century and taking three crucial wickets to secure a 32-run victory over Hampshire at the Kia Oval. This win marks Surrey’s second consecutive victory in the tournament.
Fresh off the plane, the Australian international blazed an unbeaten 63 runs from just 35 balls, including four sixes and five fours. Harris formed vital half-century partnerships with Danni Wyatt-Hodge (62 from 41 balls) and Paige Scholfield (49 from 18 balls). This explosive batting display followed a strong opening stand of 73 between Wyatt-Hodge and skipper Bryony Smith (33). The relentless onslaught propelled Surrey to a formidable total of 213 for 4. Hampshire’s Freya Davies took 2 for 36, but the visitors were left to rue four dropped catches and a bungled run-out attempt when Harris was on just 1.
Hampshire’s Valiant Chase Undermined by Harris’s Bowling
Hampshire’s chase was heroic, led by Ella McCaughan’s classy 81, supported by skipper Georgia Adams’ 29. However, Grace Harris proved to be the difference-maker with the ball, dismissing both McCaughan and Adams in the span of three deliveries to cap off a stunning debut. The Hawks ultimately finished on 181 for 8.
Earlier in Surrey’s innings, Bryony Smith, after a subdued start, unleashed three quick sixes, while Wyatt-Hodge, coming off a shaky series for England, also cleared the ropes. Wyatt-Hodge survived two dropped catches before Smith was dismissed. Harris herself was almost run out on 1 due to confusion, but a poor throw and fumbled wicketkeeping gave her a reprieve. She capitalized fully, hitting a six to bring up Surrey’s hundred and reaching her own fifty off just 27 balls with two more maximums. Though her innings ended tamely, Scholfield continued the fireworks, smashing three sixes, including one off the final ball, to finish just one short of a fifty.
Hampshire’s chase began with a six from in-form Maia Bouchier, who then fell early. Charlie Knott also showed brief promise. Despite these setbacks and a maiden over from Phoebe Franklin, McCaughan maintained the breathless pursuit with crisp driving and sweeping, reaching a polished fifty with 10 fours. Adams was reprieved by a dropped catch as tension mounted. However, a tough chance from McCaughan on 65 was put down by Smith, but Harris then dismissed McCaughan via a caught and bowled. Two balls later, a stunning catch by Scholfield accounted for Adams, effectively ending Hampshire’s hopes.
