Galatasaray Says Goodbye to Muslera

Fernando Muslera, the Uruguayan goalkeeper and veteran captain who embodied consistency and leadership at the Istanbul club for 14 years, is officially leaving Galatasaray.

Fans responded emotionally to Muslera’s departure as he approaches his 39th birthday this June.  The club’s social media posts were flooded with thousands of comments, including ones of tears, nostalgia, and thankfulness.

At the age of 25, Muslera transferred from Rome’s Lazio to Galatasaray in 2011, little realizing the incredible journey that lay ahead in Turkey.  He accumulated a remarkable collection of 19 trophies throughout his tenure:

Eight trophies in the Turkish Süper Lig,

 Five Turkish Cups

 Six Super Cups in Turkey.

Muslera scored the game-winning penalty kick in his final game for the team against Kayserispor (3-0)—a uncommon and heartfelt way to cap out his career wearing the red and yellow shirt. The farewell was genuinely significant.

We don’t know what the future holds.  The goalie may declare his retirement or look for a different challenge at another team.
