Gakpo and Valencia score as Netherlands and Ecuador draw 1-1

(Football news) After winning their first two games, Ecuador and Netherlands could've sealed qualification with a win but they ended up drawing 1-1. Netherlands changed their system a little by shifting Cody Gakpo to striker and replacing Vincent Janssen with Davy Klaassen. Jurrien Timber and Teun Koopmeiners replaced Matthijs de Ligt and Steven Berghuis. Memphis Depay once again wasn't in the starting line-up but he did come on at half time. Ecuador replaced Romario Ibarra with Jackson Porozo and switched from a 4-3-3 to a 3-4-3.

Gakpo scored the fastest goal of the tournament so far inside 6 minutes after an assist from Klaassen. Ecuador had a few half chances and captain Enner Valencia was always in the mix of things. Pervis Estupinan looked to have scored the equalizer but it was ruled out for offside. Ecuador did get their equalizer 4 minutes into the 2nd half via Valencia. This was the Ecuador captain's 3rd goal of the tournament. Ecuador had some decent chances to score the winner but the match ended in a draw. The goal from Gakpo was the only shot on target Netherlands had in the whole game compared to Ecuador's 4.

The big worry for Ecuador was that Valencia was taken off in a stretcher in the dying minutes of the game which is a big worry. Both the teams just need to win or draw their next matches each to qualify for the last 16. Netherlands' performance was a little concerning for Louis Van Gal as it was nowhere near standard. They will need to come back with a strong display against Qatar to take the momentum into the next round. So far the Dutch have not displayed anything special to show that they could go far in this tournament.
