(Football news) Frank Lampard has been appointed caretaker manager of Chelsea until the end of the season. The former midfielder will be at the dugout for Chelsea’s next game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday and was present at Stamford Bridge when the Blues drew against Liverpool. The player is Chelsea’s record goalscorer and was sacked as head coach in January 2021. He then took over at Everton but was sacked after less than a year.

The announcement to appoint Lampard comes after Chelsea hierarchy held talks with former Barcelona and Spain manager Luis Enrique in London about the managerial vacancy. The 52 year old has had an incredibly successful career, especially at the Camp Nou as he won the treble with the club in the 2014/15 season, lifting the La Liga, Champions League and Copa Del Rey trophies. It’s expected that up to seven candidates are being assessed by Chelsea in what has been described as an “exhaustive process” to replace Potter.

Julian Nagelsmann, Mauricio Pochettino, Ruben Amorim, Oliver Glasner and Luciano Spalletti are the short listed candidates who are being discussed internally while Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi won’t be considered. According to reports, talks between Nagelsmann and Chelsea’s representatives have been ongoing and positive and the 35 year old is keen to manage in the Premier League.
