(Football news) Diego Costa is undergoing his medical at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday. According to reports the Premier League club were considering a deal to sign the former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid forward as their new summer signings Sasa Kalajdzic suffered a serious injury. Costa, who recently turned 33, was a free agent since January 2022, when he subsequently terminated his contract at Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro. This meant that Bruno Lage’s side were able to sign him outside the transfer window, which closed on Thursday.
Wolves are flying Costa to the UK and he is expected to sign officially on Tuesday. Wolves are exploring a replacement after Sasa Kalajdzic suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury less than 45 minutes into his debut against Southampton on Saturday. The injury news put Wolves back in the position they were in before his arrival, with Raul Jimenez as their only proper centre forward. The Mexican also withdrew from yesterday’s game after feeling pain in his knee in the warm-up but it is believed that the injury wasn’t too serious and should return to training this week.
Costa has a lot of experience in the Premier League, having spent three seasons at Chelsea where he was an integral figure in their 2015 and 2017 Premier League triumphs. The Spanish international went on to score 59 goals in 120 games during his three-season spell at the west London club. Costa has an incredible trophy collection as he won two Premier League championships, two La Liga championships, three European Super Cups, the Brazilian championship, the Europa League, Copa del Rey, the Brazilian Cup, and the EFL Cup. He has also gone on to make 24 senior Spain appearances for the Spanish national team. Costa is expected to receive a one-year contract from Wolves if all goes according to plan during his trial. If he performs well, then the West Midlands team can extend that contract.
“Sasa felt a pain in his knee late in the first half against Southampton. Unfortunately, scans reveal an anterior cruciate injury and he will see a knee specialist,” a statement from Wolves read. “We now need to support Sasa in his recovery and further updates will follow.”
