(Football news) Arsenal continued their impressive run in the Women’s Super League with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Everton to maintain their perfect start. The Gunners were coming off the back of an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to FC Barcelona in the Champions League but recovered swiftly for their domestic campaign. A half-volley by Katie McCabe opened the scoring for Arsenal just after the half hour mark.
Nine minutes later, Carlotte Wubben-Moy nutmegged Everton goalkeeper Sandy MacIver to double the lead in what looked like a comfortable win. An even more dominant performance in the second half saw Frida Maanum score past Maclver from 20 yards for her fifth goal in as many games as Arsenal maintained their unbeaten start and three points lead in the Women’s Super League.
Chelsea defeated newly promoted Leicester City 2-0 in the WSL with goals from Pernille Harder and Fran Kirby. The reigning champions only broke the deadlock seven minutes from time when Harder found the back of the net from a short corner. Kirby scored her 50th goal of her career in the 94th minute at the Cherry Red Records Stadium to progress into third place at the Women’s Super League table while Leicester’s poor start continued at the bottom with no points.
Meanwhile at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, Reading earned their first win in the WSL after a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa. Goals from Amalie Eikeland, Rachel Rowe and Natasha Dowie in the first half were all it took to give Reading all three points against Carla Ward's Villa team who have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Tottenham started off the weekend in 2nd place on the Women’s Super League table but endured a torrid match against Brighton that saw goals conceded in each half for Spurs and played with 10 women after forward Rachel Williams was sent off for receiving two yellow cards. The Seagulls opened the scoring through Lee Geum-min’s low shot to give them a deserved lead in the first half. In the closing stages of the match, Victoria Williams scored Brighton’s second while Spurs managed a consolation goal through Kit Graham but it was too little too late. Tottenham are now third in the Women’s Super League table behind Arsenal and Chelsea.
