Women’s Champions League: Arsenal score three past HB Koge, on the brink of progressing to knockout stage

(Football news) Arsenal Women comfortably defeated HB Koge Women 3-0 at Meadow Park last night in the Women’s Champions League and the Gunners look set to reach the knockout stage of the elite club competition with only three points separating them from Group C leaders Barcelona with just two games remaining.

Arsenal are without a doubt the in-form team at the moment, currently on top of the Women’s Super League and are almost on the verge of progressing into the quarter-finals of the Champions League with six points separating the Gunners from third place Hoffenheim. The match against HB Koge was an important one apart from the vital three points, it gave manager Jonas Eidevall a chance to provide some much needed game time to his squad players, a crucial factor in the number of matches Arsenal are playing in this season while competing in different competitions. Moreover, a stubborn low block by HB Koge Women forced his Arsenal players to make full use of their opportunities.

Arsenal’s Caitlin Foord opened the scoring in the 15th minute after timing her arrival into the box perfectly to head home a cross from Beth Mead. The 26 year old thought she doubled Arsenal’s lead just before half-time when her composed finish found the back of the net but it was ruled offside. Eidevall’s team failed to find a breakthrough until 10 minutes from time when Lotte Wubben-Moy scored Arsenal’s second goal in the 83rd minute from Beth Mead’s corner and Vivianne Miedema scored the third in the 88th minute after being assisted by Stephanie Catley's long ball.

Arsenal will be looking to avenge their humiliating defeat against Barcelona when they welcome the Catalans to the Emirates Stadium next week but before that the Gunners will face Manchester United in the Women’s Super League this weekend, hoping to cement their position at the top of the table with only one point separating them from Chelsea.
