WCL: PSG advance to the knockouts after 2-0 win away at Real Madrid

(Football news) PSG have booked their place in the Women's Champions League Round of 16 after a 2-0 win over Real Madrid. They became the 2nd team after Barcelona to qualify for this year's knockouts after 4 straight wins. As for Real Madrid, they still have a realistic chance of making it to the knockouts provided they win their next two games.

Real Madrid started with Misa Rodriguez in goal unlike the reverse fixture. The shot stopper did make a few very good saves and was seen commanding the back line on various occasions. Real Madrid was once again without Peter Babbet in the first half. Aurélie Kaci also wasn't fit enough to start the game but did come on in the 73rd minute. Real Madrid did start the game well as striker Asther Gonzalez had a couple of good chances but as the game progressed PSG started to assert their dominance.

Just like the game in Paris, set pieces were Los Blancos' worst nightmare. The physical prowess of PSG was at times too much to deal with. Marie-Antoinette Katoto proved exactly that as she broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute from an excellent set piece delivery by Ramona Bachmann. Sakina Karchaoui danced through the left wing to score a wonderful goal to seal the victory for PSG. The French left back with her quick feet was a very tricky customer to deal with for the Merengues.

Considering this is Real Madrid's first time in the WCL, the Los Blancos are punching well over their weight. This team is different from the one that finished 2nd in La Liga last season. Injuries to Babbet, Kaci and Kosovare Asllani have also slowed down the progress. If Real Madrid do manage to get to the Round of 16 which they should from this position, it will be a great achievement for the club. Asllani has just started training with the ball after being out for 7 weeks. The Swedish forward is key to Real Madrid as the team is built around her. Real Madrid's next game in the league is against 7th placed Deportivo Alaves and the Los Blancos have got 3 consecutive wins in the league but are still 10th.
