Union Berlin hand a shock defeat to Dortmund while Bayern win

(Football news) Union Berlin scored twice in 13 minutes as the Bundesliga leaders cruised past Borussia Dortmund to open up a four-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table. Haberer was quick to pounce when Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel miskicked the ball, tapping in from close range in the 8th minute and then drilled in another goal with a powerful shot from the edge of the box in the 21st minute of the match. Dortmund's backline was very sloppy in the first half and the visitors were lucky to go into the halftime break with just a two-goal deficit as Union's Sheraldo Becker wreaked havoc down the wing.

Dortmund improved after the break and Kobel redeemed himself for his first-half error with a brilliant stop off Timo Baumgartl’s header but Dortmund lacked ideas in attack to threaten the hosts. They tried to launch a late comeback attempt with Jude Bellingham, Marco Reus and Youssoufa Moukoko in the final 15 minutes but Union keeper Frederik Ronnow was on hand to deny them. The win kept Union at the top with the league's best defence, four points clear of champions Bayern Munich in second place as Dortmund's fourth league loss of the season saw them drop to eighth in the table on 16.

"This is brutally disappointing," Dortmund coach Edin Terzic said. "At the end we offered too little. We tried to come back in the second half but it just was not enough."

"I am obviously happy when looking at the standings," said Union coach Urs Fischer. "But as I said before this is just a momentary snapshot. The 23 points after 10 matches are unusual and will help us enormously to get through the next four weeks. The boys love playing every two days”.

Bayern Munich scored five goals past a hapless Freiburg in a 5-0 demolition job on to into second place. The defending champions are now on 19 points which is subsequently one ahead of third-placed Freiburg who suffered their second league defeat. Bayern squandered a two-goal lead in a disappointing 2-2 draw with Dortmund last week as they got off the proceedings with a Serge Gnabry goal after he headed in on the rebound when Freiburg keeper Mark Flekken parried a close-range shot by Leroy Sane in the 13th minute.

The champions gradually upped the pressure with forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting doubling their lead with a threading low shot inside the far post for his first league goal of the season. Freiburg hardly got a look in and did not get a shot on target in the first half. It was the same after the break with Sane whipping in a superb left-footed shot past Flekken to make it 3-0 before Sadio Mane's chip over the keeper in the 55th killed off the game as Marcel Sabizter's completed a five star performances with a fifth goal in the  80th-minute to complete the rout.
