Super-sub Antoine Griezmann gets Atletico Madrid back to winning ways

(Football news) After losing their home fixture against Villarreal last week, Atletico Madrid travelled to Valencia. The Rojiblancos got a narrow 1-0 victory to get back to winning ways. Diego Simeone started with his regular 3-5-2 with Saul Niguez at left wing back and Yannick Carrasco on the bench. The home side dominated possession as they had 71% of the ball. Atleti did create more clear cut chances as they had 7 shots on target while Valencia had just 2. Yunus Musah had scored an amazing goal in the 23rd minute but it was ruled out by VAR for a foul in the build up.

The rest of the first half was pretty evenly matched. Alvaro Morata had a glorious chance to break the deadlock right at the end of the half but his shot was saved by Giorgi Mamardashvili. Simeone brought on Antoine Griezmann in the 64th minute and moments later he scored the opening goal of the match. Atletico kept things tight for the rest of the match and secured the 3 points. The Valencia shot stopper made a few good saves towards the end to keep his side in the game. Atleti's next match is away at Real Sociedad which is always a tough challenge.

Antoine Griezmann is currently at Atletico Madrid on loan from Barcelona and at the end of the season Atletico Madrid have a buy clause of £50m. There are reports in Spain which claim that the buy clause will be mandatory if Griezmann plays more than 30 minutes of football in 50 % of games this season. In the 3 games this season the Frenchman, despite scoring twice has played less than 30 minutes in all 3 games. The decision could just be down to Simeone's preference or it is a club decision to save money. Barcelona will definitely not be happy with what is happening as they have already lost a lot of money on Griezmann.
